Here are three excellent Open Doors events to consider during a September camping break in North Wales.

Plas Newydd House & Garden, Anglesey – 12 & 13 September

Head across the Menai Strait to Plas Newydd on Ynys Môn (Anglesey) for a chance to explore this historic house and its beautiful surroundings.

The Open Doors event takes place on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September 2026, making it a great addition to an Anglesey day trip from the campsite. The setting overlooking the Menai Strait is particularly impressive, and the event provides an opportunity to enjoy the house, gardens and parkland without the usual admission charge.

With Beaumaris, Menai Bridge and some of Anglesey’s spectacular coastline nearby, you could easily turn your visit into a full day exploring the island.

Bodnant Garden, Conwy – 12 & 13 September

Garden lovers have another excellent option on the same weekend, with Bodnant Garden participating in Open Doors on 12 and 13 September 2026.

This famous Grade I-listed garden is one of North Wales’ most impressive outdoor attractions. September is a lovely time to explore its terraces, riverside areas and extensive gardens, with plenty of late-summer colour still on display.

It’s also easy to combine Bodnant with a visit to Conwy, giving you the chance to explore one of North Wales’ best-known historic towns during the same day.

Penrhyn Castle, Bangor – Free Entry 19 & 20 September

Closer to Llys Derwen is the impressive Penrhyn Castle and Garden near Bangor, which opens as part of the festival on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September 2026 from 10am until 5pm.

Visitors can explore the castle’s grand rooms and Victorian kitchens while learning more about the complicated history behind the wealth that created the estate.

There will also be traditional slate splitting and dressing demonstrations by quarrymen from the National Slate Museum — particularly fitting when visiting an area whose landscape and communities have been shaped so profoundly by the slate industry.

The grounds also offer views towards Eryri and the North Wales coast, making Penrhyn well worth adding to your itinerary.

More Than 200 Places to Discover Across Wales

Cadw's Open Doors 2026 programme includes more than 200 historic landmarks and locations across Wales, with events ranging from castles and historic houses to churches, Roman remains, archives, gardens and buildings that aren't normally accessible to the public.

There are several other events particularly relevant to anyone staying around Caernarfon and Snowdonia, including Segontium Roman Fort in Caernarfon on 12–13 September, Caernarfon Record Office on 12 September and the Institute Building in Caernarfon on 26 September.
