Camping Near Snowdon: Your Perfect Base for Exploring Eryri & North Wales
Home > Blog > Camping Near Snowdon: Your Perfect Base for Exploring Eryri & North Wales
If you’re planning a trip to North Wales, there’s a good chance Yr Wyddfa – better known to many as Snowdon – is somewhere on your list.
For some, it’s the main reason for coming. For others, it’s just one part of a longer break filled with walking, beaches, castles, villages, good food and days spent exploring.
That’s one of the reasons we think Llys Derwen makes such a good base.
We’re close to Snowdon and the heart of Eryri, but we’re also brilliantly placed for discovering much more of North Wales during the same stay.
Whether you’re arriving with a tent, caravan or motorhome, travelling as a couple, bringing the family or holidaying with your dog, it’s a location that gives you plenty of choice.
Close to Snowdon and the heart of Eryri
One of the biggest reasons guests choose Llys Derwen is our location.
We’re ideally placed for exploring Eryri National Park, with easy access towards Snowdon, Llanberis and the surrounding mountains.
For walkers, that means you can spend the day out on the hills and return to a comfortable, well-kept campsite afterwards.
You also don’t necessarily need to spend the whole holiday driving.
The Sherpa bus service is a popular option for visitors heading towards Snowdon and the surrounding walking routes, and we’re always happy to help guests work out the best way to get where they want to go.
North Wales can feel quite daunting when you first look at a map, especially if you’re trying to work out which route to take, where to park or which area is best suited to you.
That’s where a little local knowledge can make a big difference.
More than one day out
Snowdon may be one of the biggest attractions in North Wales, but it certainly isn’t the only one.
One of the things our guests often tell us is how much they appreciate being able to use Llys Derwen as a base for several completely different days out.
You can spend one day exploring the mountains and another heading towards the coast.
Caernarfon is nearby, with its famous castle, waterfront and shops, while Anglesey is also within easy reach if you fancy beaches, coastal walks or a change of scenery.
There are historic villages, scenic drives, steam railways, museums and attractions throughout the area, so even guests staying for several days rarely struggle to fill their time.
And, of course, sometimes it’s nice not to plan anything at all.
There are local walks, peaceful surroundings and a pub only a short walk away from the campsite, which makes a quieter day just as enjoyable.
A campsite you actually look forward to coming back to
After a full day walking in the mountains, sightseeing or exploring the coast, the campsite you return to really matters.
We take a huge amount of pride in keeping Llys Derwen clean, tidy and well maintained.
Our toilet and shower facilities are something guests mention time and time again in their reviews, and we work hard to keep those standards high throughout the season.
The pitches are cared for, the grounds are kept neat and we want the whole site to feel welcoming from the moment you arrive.
Camping near Snowdon doesn’t have to mean giving up comfort.
There’s something particularly satisfying about getting back after a long day out, having a proper hot shower and relaxing somewhere peaceful.
A great option for caravans, motorhomes and tents
Different people camp in very different ways.
Some guests love nothing more than a simple tent and a couple of camping chairs.
Others arrive with caravans or motorhomes and want electric hook-up, good facilities and a reliable base from which to explore.
Llys Derwen welcomes a mixture of guests, and that’s part of what gives the site its relaxed atmosphere.
We regularly welcome walkers, couples, families, touring caravans and motorhomes, as well as guests staying in our static caravan.
If you’re looking for a campsite near Snowdon but still want a well-maintained touring site with modern facilities, Llys Derwen gives you both.
Bringing your dog to Snowdonia?
North Wales is a fantastic place to visit with a dog.
There are walks everywhere, plenty of outdoor attractions and miles of countryside to explore.
At Llys Derwen, dogs are very much part of campsite life.
We have a dedicated secure dog exercise area where guests can let their dogs have a good run, which is particularly useful at the beginning or end of the day.
We also have our on-site Doggy Day Care.
This gives guests an extra option if they want to visit somewhere their dog cannot go, head out for a longer activity or simply enjoy a few hours knowing their dog is being safely looked after.
It’s not something every campsite can offer, and for many dog owners it makes planning their North Wales holiday much easier.
A peaceful base after a busy day
Being close to some of North Wales’ biggest attractions doesn’t mean your evenings have to feel busy.
One of the things we love most about Llys Derwen is how peaceful it can be.
Guests regularly comment on the sunsets, the mountain views and the clear night skies.
After a day spent exploring, there’s something very simple about sitting outside your caravan, motorhome or tent and watching the evening settle in.
That slower part of the day is often just as memorable as the places you visit.
Local food and practical essentials nearby
Nobody wants to drive miles just to find something to eat after a long day in the mountains.
Fortunately, there’s a pub within a few minutes’ walk of the campsite serving food, which many of our guests make good use of during their stay.
There are also shops nearby for those bits and pieces you inevitably forget to pack.
It sounds like a small thing, but having useful amenities close by makes a camping holiday much easier, particularly when you’ve already spent most of the day out exploring.
Camping near Snowdon without limiting your holiday to Snowdon
If climbing Yr Wyddfa is the main purpose of your trip, Llys Derwen puts you in a great position to do it.
But one of the real advantages of staying here is that your holiday doesn’t have to begin and end with the mountain.
You can explore Eryri, visit Caernarfon, head across to Anglesey, discover the North Wales coastline and still come back to the same peaceful base each evening.
For many guests, that flexibility is exactly what makes the location work so well.
