Snowdon and the lakes of Eryri, North Wales

Planning a holiday in Snowdonia (Eryri) and wondering what happens if the weather takes a turn?

You're certainly not alone!

North Wales is famous for its spectacular mountains, beautiful lakes and breathtaking scenery, but even the most carefully planned holiday can encounter a rainy day or two.

The good news is that there's much more to this beautiful part of Wales than climbing Snowdon.

Whether you're visiting with children, enjoying a couples' getaway or exploring North Wales with friends, there are plenty of fantastic things to do when the clouds roll in.

At Llys Derwen Caravan & Campsite, we're fortunate to be surrounded by some wonderful attractions, many of which are ideal when the weather isn't quite what you'd hoped for.

Here are seven of our favourite rainy-day activities near Snowdon and Llanberis.

1. Get Creative at Piggery Pottery Near Llanberis

If you're looking for something relaxing, creative and suitable for the whole family, Piggery Pottery is a lovely option.

Situated in Cwm-y-Glo, between Llanberis and Caernarfon, this established pottery studio offers visitors the chance to paint their own pottery and create something special to take home.

It's particularly enjoyable for families with younger children, although adults can have just as much fun designing their own mugs, plates and decorations.

One of the nicest things about this activity is that you leave with a personal souvenir from your North Wales holiday.

Opening days vary throughout the year, so it's worth checking availability before travelling.

2. Try Indoor Climbing at Beacon Climbing Centre

Just because the weather isn't suitable for climbing Snowdon doesn't mean your adventure has to stop.

Beacon Climbing Centre in Caernarfon offers an excellent alternative for anyone who enjoys being active.

The centre welcomes complete beginners alongside experienced climbers, with climbing walls, specialist equipment and opportunities for supervised instruction.

For families with energetic children, it's a brilliant way to burn off some energy while staying warm and dry.

It's also a great introduction to climbing if you've spent your holiday admiring the mountains of Eryri and fancy trying something new.

3. Enjoy a Film or Live Performance at Galeri Caernarfon

Sometimes the perfect rainy-day activity is simply finding somewhere comfortable, enjoying a coffee and watching a good film.

Galeri Caernarfon is a contemporary arts and entertainment centre overlooking Caernarfon's waterfront.

The venue hosts cinema screenings, live performances, exhibitions and cultural events throughout the year.

It's a particularly good option for couples or families who want a more relaxed afternoon after several busy days exploring Snowdonia.

You could even combine a cinema visit with a meal in Caernarfon before returning to your campsite for the evening.

4. Let the Children Have Fun at The Fun Centre

If you're camping in North Wales with younger children, you'll know how important it is to have a backup plan when the weather changes.

The Fun Centre in Caernarfon is a large indoor play attraction offering slides, climbing equipment and activities designed to keep children entertained.

There's also a separate play area for younger visitors.

It's a useful option when the rain is particularly heavy and everyone needs a break from outdoor activities.

While the children enjoy themselves, parents can take the opportunity to relax before heading off on their next North Wales adventure.

5. Explore Underground at Zip World Llechwedd

For something completely different, why not head underground?

Zip World Llechwedd, near Blaenau Ffestiniog, offers some extraordinary experiences inside the historic slate mines.

Visitors can discover the fascinating history of North Wales' slate industry through the Deep Mine Tour, which explores underground chambers and the stories of the people who once worked there.

For those looking for something more adventurous, there are also underground activities involving climbing, zip lines and other challenges.

It's a wonderful way to experience a completely different side of Eryri.

Although much of the attraction is sheltered underground, visitors should still check individual activity requirements, availability and suitability before booking.

6. Discover Tropical Wildlife at Pili Palas Nature World

Fancy escaping the Welsh rain and stepping into somewhere tropical?

Pili Palas Nature World on Anglesey is a popular family attraction with indoor wildlife experiences, a butterfly house and play facilities.

Children can discover fascinating creatures while exploring an environment that feels very different from the mountains of Snowdonia.

It's an especially good option for families who want to combine education with entertainment.

Because Anglesey is easily accessible from Llys Derwen, you can enjoy a completely different day out without having to change accommodation.

7. Discover Marine Life at Anglesey Sea Zoo

Another excellent rainy-day attraction is Anglesey Sea Zoo, situated near the Menai Strait.

Unlike many larger aquariums, Anglesey Sea Zoo focuses on marine creatures found around British waters.

Visitors can discover fascinating species including seahorses, jellyfish, octopuses and other marine wildlife.

The attraction also provides information about conservation and protecting the marine environment.

It's a lovely option for families and visitors who enjoy wildlife, particularly when the weather isn't suitable for spending the day on the beach.

What If You've Brought Your Dog to Snowdonia?

One of the things we understand at Llys Derwen is that many guests bring their dogs on holiday.

North Wales is a wonderful destination for dog owners, with miles of countryside, lakeside walks and beautiful places to explore together.

However, not every indoor attraction welcomes dogs.

That's why we offer Doggy Day Care at Llys Derwen.

Our daytime care service allows guests to enjoy attractions where dogs aren't permitted, knowing their four-legged companions are being looked after in safe, comfortable surroundings.

Morning, afternoon and full-day care options are available, subject to availability and suitability.

It means you don't have to miss out on some of North Wales' best attractions simply because you've brought your dog on holiday.

Don't Forget That Rainy Days Can Still Be Beautiful

Of course, a little rain doesn't mean you have to stay indoors all day.

Some of the most atmospheric views in Eryri happen when the clouds settle around the mountains and mist drifts across the valleys.

Llyn Padarn near Llanberis is particularly beautiful in changing weather, with the surrounding mountains creating a dramatic backdrop.

If the rain eases, a short walk around the lakeside followed by a warm drink in Llanberis can be a lovely way to spend an afternoon.

Just remember that mountain weather can change quickly. If you're planning to walk Yr Wyddfa, always check the latest forecast and conditions before setting out.

There's no shame in changing your plans when the weather isn't suitable.

After all, Snowdon will still be there tomorrow.
