Weather on Yr Wyddfa | Snowdon

Planning for weather conditions on Yr Wyddfa | Mount Snowdon

At Llys Derwen Caravan & Campsite, we’re lucky to wake up every day in the foothills of Snowdonia, with Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) always in sight and often part of our guests’ plans. Many of the people who stay with us are heading up the mountain for the first time, while others return year after year. One question we’re asked more than any other is: “What will the weather be like on the summit?”

The truth is, planning for weather on Snowdon is one of the most important parts of any visit. Based on what we see locally — and what our guests experience firsthand — here’s our practical advice on how to plan properly for summit conditions.

A Local Perspective from Llys Derwen Caravan & Campsite

At Llys Derwen Caravan & Campsite, we see Snowdon as part of everyday life rather than just a landmark on the horizon. Being based near Caernarfon, we watch the mountain change with the seasons — clear and calm one day, wrapped in cloud and wind the next. It’s something our guests quickly notice too, especially those heading up Yr Wyddfa for the first time.

We often hear people say how surprised they were by the conditions near the top compared to what they experienced when leaving the campsite that morning. Calm valleys, blue skies, and mild temperatures don’t always tell the full story higher up. From chatting with walkers when they return, it’s clear that those who took the time to plan for the weather — and pack accordingly — enjoyed their day far more, even when conditions were challenging.

From our local point of view, the best Snowdon days aren’t always the sunniest ones. They’re the days when people made sensible decisions, checked the right forecasts, adjusted their plans, and came back safe, tired, and smiling. That’s why we always encourage guests to treat Snowdon as a serious mountain and to let the weather guide their choices, not their hopes.

If you’re staying with us and planning a walk, we’re always happy to have a quick conversation about conditions, forecasts, and what to expect. We want everyone who stays at Llys Derwen Caravan & Campsite to leave with great memories of Snowdonia — and a healthy respect for the mountain that brings so many people here.

Our Advice as a Local Snowdonia Campsite

As a campsite based just a short distance from Snowdon, we see the mountain in all its moods. Some days reward walkers with clear views and calm conditions; other days demand patience, flexibility, and good judgement.

Our advice at Llys Derwen Caravan & Campsite is always the same: treat Snowdon like a serious mountain, check specialist forecasts, pack for all conditions, and never hesitate to turn back if the weather changes. The summit will still be there tomorrow — and you’ll enjoy it far more when conditions are right.

If you’re staying with us and planning a walk, we’re always happy to chat about local conditions, current forecasts, and the best approach for the day. We want every guest to have a safe, memorable Snowdonia experience — on and off the mountain.
